ARTS341 :: Image Practice :: Schedule

* Monday (classroom 229) Wednesday (comp lab 336E)

** All assigned readings require a 100+ word response (using blog) unless otherwise noted due on the day of the reading discussion.

Week 1

In Class:
+ Intro to class
+ Assemble student working groups
+ Assigned Reading Chandler's "Signs" + "Denotation, Connotation and Myth" Chapters from Semiotics for Beginners (due Wednesday, Sept 3)
+ Bring in one picture of a city (any city, any source, except your own camera !AND ON PAPER - NOT DIGITAL!) NEXT CLASS

In Lab:
+ Discuss images of cities
+ Iconography Presentation (icons: Che, the Swastika, terrorism)
+ Photoshop introduction: creating and saving files in multiple formats (Photoshop) - using scans from your city picture + file management digital image info
+ Set up blog with Blogger account - put your picture on your blog
+ Flickr account - using Flickr (web optimized images, uploading tools, tagging - groups)
+ Begin Iconography Assignment Part 1: iconographic archive

Week 2

In Class:
Labor Day Holiday

In Lab:
+ Discuss Chandler readings
+ Archive work/basic digital image work
+ Photoshop Tennis exercise, basic Photoshop (start with this image)
- What is Photoshop Tennis (see an example)

Week 3

In Class:
+ Review first iconography assignment, iconographic archive
+ Begin Iconography Assignment Part 2: photo-spatial exercise

In Lab:
+ Basic primer on digital cameras and images

Week 4

In Class:
+ Review Project 1, Part 2: photo spatial exercise
+ Assigned Reading: Cresswell's Place: A short introduction Chapter 1, pp 1-12 (due in 1 week)
+ Begin Project 2: Semiotic City, Part 1: As Above, So Below? (due in 2 weeks)

In Lab:
+ Photoshop video/web tutorials from Adobe (specificly on: layers, type, selections, brushes, shape tools)
+ Powerpoint/presentation techniques

Week 5

In Class:
+ Visit Map & Geography Library
+ Discuss Cresswell pp.1-12
+ View Trevor Paglen interview
+ Assigned Reading: Cresswell Chapter 2, pp. 15-33 (due in 1 week)

In Lab:
+ Project 2 research work + group discussions
+ Tour with Dave Monk - Downtown Champaign

Week 6

In Class:
+ Discuss Cresswell pp. 15-33
+ Check in with Project 2, Part1
+ Assigned Reading: Cresswell pp. 33-51 (due in 1 week)

In Lab:
+ Group work on presentations
+ Screening Thom Andersen's "Los Angeles Plays Itself" (excerpt) Room 114 @ 5pm

Week 7

In Class:
+ Discuss Cresswell pp. 33-51
+ (** October 8 **) Project 2, Part 1: Semiotic City: As Above, So Below? - Groups Deliver Presentations

In Lab:
+ Illustrator basics (document creation, pen tool, shapes, fill, stroke, type)
+ Begin work on Project 2, Part 2: Disorientation (due Nov 3)

Week 8 - 9

+ Lab work, discussions around Project 2B
+ Edward Tufte's Micro Macro Chapter (and some other information visualization examples)

Week 10

In Class:
+ Review Project 2, Part 2: Disorientation (Mon Nov 3)
+ Assigned Reading: Cresswell Chapter 3 due (Mon Nov 3)
