| ASSIGNMENT 02........ DUE ON TUESDAY FEBRUARY 20 |
Choose one item from the CONTENT column below (in this case "Love," "Hate," "Fear," "Truth," "Envy"). Then choose one item from the TECHNICAL PARAMETER column (for this assignment it's "Mattes" or "Multiple Images" or "Words & Language As A Graphic Element" or "Created Music/Edit-Beat"). Edit your piece with Final Cut Pro. Make a two-three minute video. Let the Content and Technical Parameters inform your decisions - visually, technically and metaphorically. Use the limitations to shape your piece.
2 PARTS:
QUICKTIME MOVIE
Bring your full DV-resolution (720x480) quicktime movie to class on your Lacie drive so we can project it.

| CONTENT PARAMETER |
.....LOVE.....HATE.....FEAR.....TRUTH.....ENVY.....
Choose one of the words above. Make a 2-3 minute piece responding to that word. Was there a moment in your life when you felt one of these words very deeply? How can you use the memory of that moment to inform this piece?
Spend some time thinking about what the word you've chosen means to YOU. While thinking about this, try to strip away as many cultural references as you can. Don't do the easy, knee-jerk Hollywood "love/hate/etc." thing. Be as objective and brutally honest as you can. How does it feel to you? |

| TECHNICAL PARAMETER |
MATTES
In editing your piece in Final Cut, make heavy use of mattes to shape and design your piece. Mattes can be particularly useful as a way to transition from one shot to the next. a piece that's all transitions? Where the viewer is never sure what is negative space and what is positive space? Using mattes often requires a lot of thought BEFORE you shoot (pre-production). So...think.
MULTIPLE IMAGES
Use layered and multiple images to edit, shape and design your piece in Final Cut. Have a REASON for adding the multiple images. Do the two, three, or four images in the frame inform each other? Is there visual tension or harmony set up between them? How does the number of images effect the focus/meaning of the work? How can sound guide the viewer's attention in a frame of multiple images?.
WORDS & LANGUAGE AS A GRAPHIC ELEMENT
Use words/text... printed language as a graphic/design element when you are editing your piece in Final Cut. How can this design element work for you visually and as a tool to make/change meaning? How can the word/design element bolster and enhance the meaning of that segment of the piece... how can the word/design element be used to create tension?
CREATED-MUSIC/EDIT-BEAT
Create a musical soundtrack that consists entirely of sounds you've recorded - not sounds recorded from musical instruments - use ordinary, everyday sounds (cars, horns, walking, doors opening, doors slamming, coughs, laughs, birds, wind, etc.). Edit your video to this music that you've created.
