ASSIGNMENT 03 + MIDTERM DVD........ DUE ON TUESDAY MARCH 13
Choose one item from the CONTENT PARAMETER column below (in this case "Red," "Blue," "Orange"). Then choose one item from the PRODUCTION TECHNICAL PARAMETER list (for this assignment it's camera-based parameters - "Zooms + Pans" or "Focus/Blur + Depth of Field" or "Close-ups") and one item from the POST-PRODUCTION TECHNICAL PARAMETERS. Edit your piece with Final Cut Pro. Make a two-three minute video. Let the Content and Technical Parameters inform your decisions - visually, technically and metaphorically. Use the limitations to shape your piece.

2 PARTS:
QUICKTIME MOVIE
Bring your full DV-resolution (720x480) quicktime movie to class on your Lacie drive so we can project it.
YOUTUBE
Post your video on Youtube. Make sure you post it as "UIUC..." Forward the URL to Deke for inclusion on LINKS page.

MIDTERM DVD
Using DVD Studio Pro, create a DVD (with a menu) that includes Assignments 1, 2, and 3.
CONTENT PARAMETER

Color. Pretty pretty color. Specific colors have specific meanings. In certain religions and cultures specific colors, used in the wrong place at the wrong time, can kill you. How can color effect the mood of a piece? How is color used in paintings? In photographs? Now look at all the moving images in your world - film, t.v., the net - pay attention to the "color palette" of commercials, t.v. shows, movies, magazine ads, web-page layouts. Now think of your 2 minute video in terms of color. With everything you bring to this piece, include the thought that what you are making is a fast-moving PAINTING, a POSTER IN MOTION. Choose ONE of these colors to dominate your moving painting:

RED...BLUE...ORANGE (oh, that's toooo easy)
TECHNICAL PARAMETER

PRODUCTION TECH PARAMETERS (choose one)

ZOOMS + PANS
When you are out shooting, keep the camera moving - not by holding it in your hands, but by constantly zooming and/or panning. Make the camera live and breath. Don't be lazy. Use a tripod. It'll look better.

FOCUS/BLUR + DEPTH OF FIELD
Take the camera off "automatic."
When you are shooting concentrate on using the camera's focus and depth of field for visual effect. Try to get out of the "everything's in focus" mentality. See what you can make using a very shallow depth of field.

CLOSE-UPS
Make a piece comprised entirely of close-ups.

POST-PRODUCTION TECH PARAMETER (there is choice within)
TIME SHIFT
While you are editing your piece in Final Cut make use of shifting the "time" of your clips - slow-motion, fast-motion, reversed... how can you use this to make meaning with your edit?
